Replace Your Window and Door Screens To Add Value To Your Home.
Now, I’m not a handy man, and neither is Steve. Sometimes we have arguments about which end of the hammer to use and what to use it for, so we are not experts in the field of home improvement.
But, we are experts in the field of selling homes, and I will tell you that having decent screens on all your windows and doors is an important home improvement item when you are preparing your home for sale. There is nothing that says shabby like a screen flapping in the wind when a prospective buyer drives up to your home…part of that curb appeal thing we keep talking about. Repair or replace your screens on both windows and doors, and your home shines as one whose owners have loved and cared for it. And…even if you are Not preparing your home for sale, it makes good sense to keep the screens repaired so you can:
- Let the fresh air inside during those soft spring and summer days before you need the air conditioner or furnace
- You can Let the air in without the intrusion of critters (box elder bugs are the worst)
I would also add a note for all you investors who are rehabbing and “flipping” properties. One of the things I see most often in these endeavors is the lack of attention to details. Curb appeal is one of my pet peeves and one most often overlooked by property flippers. I can tell you this, if you want to get the most money out of your property…finish the job with the details…like the yard, cleaning windows, and replacing and repairing screens. A couple of dollars will translate into thousands if you just pay attention to the details! Climbing off my soap box now.
So, now you are going to replace and repair your screens, but you don’t know how to do it. Well, being the wise and wonderful ( here is where you can pledge eternal loyalty) Realtors we are….we have a solution for you.
- You can get them repaired at Lowes or Home Depot type places …for a charge, and while it is nominal, it is Still a charge. But hey, for those of us home improvement challenged folks, it is a great alternative.
- Do it yourself. The materials you need are slight and they can be purchased for a pittance ( I try to say that word at Least once a day…love the sound of it) from the very same Lowes or Home Depot. Another side note, I am not slighting other home improvement places, so please don’t email me with angry defense of your local favorite hardware store, I mention these, cause well, I shop there and I had to give you a good start on where to go.
Now, lest you think we are sending you in to the netherworld of home improvement without a guide as to what you must buy and what you must do to repair the screens, here is a step by step guide on how to do it. This guide has pictures And written instructions so whether you are an auditory or visual learner, this guide will show you how to do it.
So, go forth and rescreen, you have our blessing. Do it for your home, it will thank you for it…and if we are helping you sell your home….we will too!
